Artiste & Event Managers in the making!

The International College of Music ( ICOM) currently offers a one of its kind programme in Malaysia ; Diploma in Business- Music Industry (DBMI). This 3-year programme covers general business subjects, but what makes this program special is that students also enroll for artist and event management, record company operations, music publishing, and many other music industry driven subjects. Recently, students enrolled in the program were exposed to some very memorable and valuable learning experiences through field trips arranged by ICOM lecturers, Ms Esther Leong and Mr Shanmugan. The trips that the students undertook include :
1) Behind the scenes preparations of Orianthi’s (Michael Jackson’s guitarist) concert and “ The Big 4 “( a quadruplet of today’s well known Hong Kong teamed up recording stars).

2) Luncai Emas Production House and AJAI’s ( renowned local songwriter) music publishing company.

The students were taken to observe the backstage preparations of both Orianthi and Big 4’s concerts and were briefed on the importance of sound-check sessions and set up of the lighting systems. ‘ These articulate preparations are done to avoid any unwanted technical errors during the live concerts’, says Hooi Weng Kiat , a 2nd year DBMI student at ICOM. They were impressed by the sophisticated set – up of equipment needed for big scale concerts like these.

At the production and music publishing houses visited, they were briefed by M. Nasir, local music producer and songwriter, on artiste management and songwriting. ‘The producer takes on many roles from arranging, music publishing, protection of copyrighted songs and maintaining close contacts with the “ who’s who “ in the music industry!’ says Amin, who is also a current 2nd year DBMI student at ICOM.

These practical hands- on field trips, plus studies of business management subjects, like Economics, Financial Accounting, Marketing and Entertainment Law are taught to equip students in the DBMI program to excel not only in the entertainment industry ,but also to sharpen their business acumen skills to enhance their career prospects after graduation.

ICOM at Sri Aman

SMKP Sri Aman was ICOM’s next stop as part of an ongoing music workshop series for high schools. Students of the school’s orchestra were treated to an educational and fun session with ICOM faculty, Gabriel Evens, who gave an introduction on jazz improvisation and also took the students through the score ‘Blue Monk’, which was arranged specially for the workshop.

ICOM’s school music workshops were launched with the objective to share with high school students the different areas of music education and career options available in the industry in a fun and interactive manner.
