Friday Performance Week 5
After a long week of studies, the students of ICOM started to fill the Recital Hall and settle down into their seats, excited to see what the performers of Week 5 had planned to bring to the stage, where each of them get a chance to show what they can do to impress the crowd with their musicality. As for the judges, we had Dr. Sergio Camacho and Mr. Rishabh Rajan, lecturers from our own building. Just so you know, last week’s winner was Eugene Yeo, who will also be added onto the list of candidates for the grand finale, the Final Friday Performance.
There were courageous performers who brought their own compositions to the stage, which really impressed the crowd. Ryan Eugene, with his original composition ,“Jasmine”, filled the hall with the sweet sounds of the strings of his acoustic guitar. “If I Could Fly”, a song by Joe Satriani, was performed by our next student, Arjun Panchal who really grooved the song with lots of funk and style. Pianist Pon Venthan was another performer who wowed the crowd with his own composition - “My Life” It was a groovy and soulful song, describing his life to the audience without saying a single word. Last performer of the week, drummer Jon Voo ,worked the audience up with the song , “Big Machine”. The band was tight and the crowd went wild. Not long after that, the crowd was soothed by ‘Only Exception’, originally by Paramore, performed by Adrienne Yong,
What an interesting Friday Performance it was this week! The bar has definitely been set high by the previous performers so in order to get into the grand finale, the upcoming performers will have to really work something out to impress our crowd.
Feel free to come by every Friday, 4pm at ICOM.’s recital hall!
Friday Performance Week 4
6 performers took to the stage for Week 4’s Friday Performance. The bar had been set high by last week’s outstanding Friday Performance and everyone was determined to push that bar higher for this week.
Pianist Grace Hee, started with a jazzy piece accompanied by a drummer and a bass player. She brought her song to life and really amazed the audience. The next performer ,Nicholas Wong, also a pianist, played a jazz standard from 1925 called “Tea For Two”. He performed very expressively and the look on his face showed how much he enjoyed himself. It definitely served the audience a great cup of tea! A pop song performed by yet another pianist brought a change of wind to the atmosphere. Jeannie Wong performed “Save Me”, and with the help of her fellow college-mates, made the hall thunder with applause after her show. After a change of genre, the next performer also brought a change of instrumentation. “Catherine”, the song named after the dying aunt of the composer, Don Ross, was the piece violinist Eugene Yeo, former candidate of Final Friday performance last semester, chose to perform for everyone. The smooth melody line managed to project the sorrow felt by the composer and Eugene did an amazing job by expressing those emotions. In a blink of an eye, the stage turned into a place where rock rules! Reinchez Ng and his bandmates rocked the house down to pieces with his impressive electronic guitar playing. Kee Poh Hock, who has a love affair with power metal music , performed one of his favorite songs , “Follow The Reaper” , which was a great success with the audience.
That’s all for this week! Doesn’t Friday Performance sound exciting ? Yes? Then don’t be shy and drop by every Friday at 4pm in the Recital Hall of ICOM to get a taste of what our students can bring to the world. Till then!
Review of Friday Performance Week 3
Friday Performance is back! The ICOM students had prepared an interesting list of songs to perform with each of them competing to be the weekly winner. For those who are new to our Friday Performance, here’s a hint on what will be happening for the next few months until the end of our new July 2010 semester. There will be a winner for every week’s performance, chosen through votes by the students and marks given by our judges - Mr. Gabriel Evens and Mr. Rishabh Rajan, both lecturers of ICOM. By the end of the semester, the weekly winners will battle against each other in the Final Friday Performance.
Gan Yee Khong, the first performer , wowed the crowd with his song - ‘Ain’t Nobody.’ His arrangement of the song was a total rock sensation. Next up was Imran who pulled off a skillful rock song, showing off his amazing grasp in timing and rhythm of the powerful song - ’Aneurysm’. Songwriter ,Farai Gumbo, presented the crowd with one of his latest originals called “On The Otherside” with an acoustic guitar and his mellow voice, bringing out the lyrics of his soulful solo. The last performer of the day was David Chua on drums. This energetic drummer shared with the audience a catchy tune called “Dance Little Sister”, heating up the room before our show came to an end.
Our Friday Performance is definitely as talented and interesting as it sounds so do drop by! Every Friday at 4pm, Recital Hall, ICOM. Come and have your heart filled with the beauty of music! Cheers!
