Born and bred in Klang, Selangor, Shir Li started learning the piano at age 6.Her interest in music grew further when she was involved in the school marching band which catapulted her onto becoming the school band’s drum major. Immediately after her high school, a decision was made to pursue her music studies at the International College of Music ( Bachelor of Music in Professional Music) majoring in ‘Music Production and Technology” as conferred by the University of Westminster, U.K.
‘Straight after high school, I was on the look – out for higher education colleges and was contemplating which course to take on. Through some searching and research on the web, I stumbled onto ICOM’s website and thus, decided to pursue music as my major as it is my strong passion in this field. And of course, being not so far from home plus the affordability, ICOM is the best choice for me to undertake my music studies. I am glad I took the right path and never looked back.
When I enroled at ICOM, I chose music production and technology as I am interested in the technology and innovative side of the music industry . However, when I came to ICOM,I had zero knowledge in this field, but thanks to my lecturers, they opened up a whole new vision to me by teaching me the new and innovative trends of music technology which involves a lot of thinking, hearing and production skills! Without them, I won’t be where I am today. It has shaped me to be a prolific sound engineer with techniques of recording and mixing. Needless to say, these skills has pushed me to higher boundaries of my present job which involves a lot of sound design and music mixing techniques.
In terms of memorable experiences when I was at ICOM, I am honored to be the main sound engineer for 4 consecutive concert tribute series at ICOM throughout my studies there. Apart from that, I was the Asst Monitor Engineer for the KLF dinner charity show. The experiences were very valuable as it enabled me to learn to work effectively as a team and handle big events in terms of sound engineering which usually leave no room whatsoever for “mistakes or mishaps” in live event situations. As such, today, I am confident of manning any major live concerts and recording sessions with my knowledge and skills.
I am currently working as a sound engineer in a recording studio called “ 2AM studio” and loving every minute of it! Day in, day out, I am in control of the live sound process and handling any recording and mixing process to produce good music. Thanks to ICOM for preparing me in the industry and allowing me to excel in this job as a sound engineer which is more prone to be a “men’s role” as known in the industry. I can proudly say, “Women can do it too, maybe even better!”
